Highland Check
Carin and Dusty and I went to check up on a group of Highland Cattle who graze in a protected nature park near Harderwijk today.
There have been lots of reports on the news recently of a lot of these animals dying as when the ground is covered in snow they can't feed. We only saw one bull but if the amount of cattle dung and fresh footprints was anything to go by this group are surviving well enough.

Neige
Elsa had free tickets for this modern ballet production as her Italian boyfriend's sister dances with the company. It was beautifully done, the music was from the iconic second movement of Beethoven's 7th interspersed with lots of appropriate white noise during the heaviest bits of the snow storms. Afterwards we went backstage and met some of the dancers. It's the first time recently I actually felt it was a shame there was no snow falling on the way home...

Cyclops puppy Part 2
Dropped in to see Urbi the one-eyed Rottweiler the other day.
She's changed a lot from the sad little stressed-out beast she was when she arrived. Her coat is glossy and she's interested in everything and everyone around her. We went out for a short walk and met the pup-next-door on our way home.

Anne Frank & Goebbels
Janneke and I went to see this in Soest this evening. Comparing the diaries of Goebbels and Anne Frank. I'd seen the woman who plays Anne Frank on Pauw en Witteman this week and when she said they were playing in Soest on Saturday decided to see if I could get tickets. I'd recently read The Boy who Loved Anne Frank and then passed it on to Janneke so it was a good time for both of us to see this play based on the original diaries. I thought it was excellently done. I did get distracted now and then by the thought that I sometimes found that 'Goebbels' looked very like Wouter Bos but they both played their parts with conviction and the set, with a bed, chair and desk all wrapped in white cloth worked well. The whininess of Geobbels compared to the optimism of Anne Frank was what came over most strongly.

HOD house
During my run through and then out the other side of the Soesterduinen today I came across this rather wonderful looking house which is also lived in by HOD (Huis Oppas Dienst) house gaurdians like myself. On the one hand it would be nice to have a big rambling house again like the one in Doorn but then again I do actually like the compactness of this wee flat with it's tiny garden. And it's easy to heat, which this winter is definitely a good thing.
And if you look carefully you can see the train passing directly behind the house...

Where the Wild Things Are
Went to see this film last night in Amersfoort with Carin and Julia. From the trailer I'd seen last week I'd expected a lighter film full of stunning scenery but this was definitely dark and sometimes scary stuff. Well, dreams often are dark and scary, especially those which are in the heads of mixed up 9 year olds, so they got that right. It was clever how they got the muddled quality of dreams into the (vague) story line. One of the monsters with a male voice had a female name. Fears which started with a classroom story of how the sun was dying translated in his dreamworld into a desert landscape. All the elements of his real life were present but all jumbled up into a mixture which he sometimes felt he had control over for a while but which then just as suddenly could unravel into chaos. Definitely a film which probably reveals more on a second viewing - sometime in the future I'd like to see it again if it crops up on tv. Oh and it's definitely nOt a children's film. Julia (11) was old enough to 'get' most of it I think, but I suspect that for most 8-10 year olds (it has an 8+ certificate) it would probably not be coherent enough for them to be able to enjoy it. And any younger children would most likely just be scared witless by it.
